I Will Intervene Challenge WorkshopsStronger Community! This is the overarching goal of AFM’s I Will Intervene Challenge Workshops coming to Texas this fall. Says Kenneth Koon, Executive Director of Armed Forces Mission, “Our goal is to build stronger communities and a culture of community health within the veteran and law enforcement community.” Koon was in Texas the weekend of July 4th for filming of the movie Stronger and the first gathering of the Stronger Together Alliance. During his visit Koon felt led to return to Texas within the year. Three days later with the tragic loss of five officers in Dallas, Koon sensed an even greater urgency and plans were made to return as soon as possible.
In partnership with the Stronger Together Alliance, Armed Forces Mission will offer the I Will Intervene Workshops in several communities throughout Texas this fall. Workshops are open to individuals from all walks of life who want to learn the skills of intervention that saves lives. Since 2012 AFM has trained more than 5,000 individuals in communities primarily in Georgia and the east coast. These one and two-day workshops offer participants training in mental health first-aid and suicide intervention skills training. Koon who averages more than 150 suicide interventions every year was able to sustain a zero suicide rate for the past five years in the Army Reserve brigade where he served as a chaplain. After training 300 caregivers in his hometown of Fayetteville, Georgia in 2012 and 13 suicides dropped to a 20 year low. Koon is quick to give praise to God. “The Lord put me where I needed to be and gave me the strength to do what needed to be done.” |
