Who started the 22 Minute Challenge?
The 22 Minute Challenge was established by Armed Forces Mission Executive Director, Chaplain Kenneth Koon. Chaplain Ken was looking for a personal outlet for his own self-care to restore personal resilience that is often impacted in working every day with suicidal veterans. He also wanted a way to engage the community in a fun activity while also providing a platform to raise awareness of a stigmatized subject that many people don’t want to talk about and even fewer understand. Over the past five years Chaplain Ken has worked with more than 25,000 soldiers and has trained more than 5,000 community caregivers in the skills of crisis intervention. Yet his greatest challenge has been changing the culture. His goal is that communities move from being reactive cultures in crisis to proactive cultures of resilience and hope.
